Semiotics is defined as the study of non-linguistic meaning signs and significance in a society or the study of the meaning of any symbol or any object. For example, clothing often conveys messages. In many societies it is very common to regard som kinds of dress as formal, others as related to work and others as associated with leisure. For instance, it is assumed that the wearing of a tuxedo is for a formal event. However, for a man to go to work in shorts would be considered unacceptable in many workplaces. To attend a funeral in beachwear would be considered an insult to the deceased. Obviously, there may be occasions when circumstances mean that one has to go somewhere inappropriately dressed, but it gives rise to embarrassment and can be rude. These are some examples of the kind of things that semiotics is concerned with.
