2.3. DPPH radical scavenging activity
The scavenging activity of the extract against DPPH (2,2 diphe-
nyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical was assessed according to a standard
method with some modifications (Shalaby & Shanab, 2013). In
brief, 1 ml of extract was mixed with 4 ml of DPPH solution
(0.004%). The reaction mixture was left in the dark at room temper-
ature for 45 min. The absorbance of the mixture was measured at
517 nm. The percentage of scavenging activity against DPPH radi-
cal was calculated by the following equation:
Radical scavenging activity ð%Þ 1⁄4 ðAbscontrol À Abssample Þ=Abscontrol
where, Abscontrol is the absorbance of DPPH radical in methanol;
Abssample is the absorbance of DPPH radical solution mixed with
sample extract. All determinations were performed in triplicate
(n = 3).
