It was shown that only 10–13% of bacterial strains could be recovered using these methods (Meunier et al., 2005) due to inadequate initial transport and/or growth conditions associated with transport media (Rutala et al., 2006). Most methods currently employed for the storage of microorganisms require highly specialized storage systems,substantial technical equipment, know-how and often require very low temperature controlled environments (Hays et al., 2005).
