The exotic element is a distinctive quality in this story; in order to make students aware of a very particular sense of place, the teacher can take the students on an imaginary voyage adapted from different passages of Maugham’s text. First of all, it should be announced that the class is going on an imaginary voyage together, but before embarking they should become acquainted with a few words which they will need in their new surroundings. The teacher then explains the words in italics in the text below, which will also serve to heighten students’ curiosity. Then they should simply close their eyes, relax and concentrate on the spoken text. The teacher might want to play some jungle noises that can be found on the internet.
