Thailand is well known as the country that is rich in cultural heritage, and the most important factor that helps to develop and maintain Thai culture is the belief in Buddhism (Culture Religion, n.d.). Since the majority of Thai people are Buddhist, there are two main branches of Buddhism; Theravada and Mahayana. Theravada, which means “Doctrine of the Elders”, is more common among Thai people because it has been Thailand’s governing religion since the Sukhothai dynasty (Religious Beliefs Thailand, n.d.) Therefore, Buddhism plays a great role in Thai society and enriches the lives of Thais in all their aspects (Buddhism Thailand, 2012). Buddhism teaches that life does not begin with birth and end with death, but it link to the chain of lives means that what a person had done in previous life would affect to the next life (Thailand, n.d.). Hence, Thai people intend to do things carefully because they don’t want their next lives to be effected by what they have done in this life. Also, Buddhists believe that love brings happiness and selfishness results in suffering. In addition, Buddhist temples in Thailand are the center of Buddhism, it could be the heart of Thai Buddhists and the community. This is because most of the temples are located in the community and the temples also provide education for children that cannot afford the fees of other schools. Therefore, Buddhist temples in Thailand are not only the places for religious beliefs, but also the place where educate and give chances to young people to be good people in the future.
