A similar terracotta has relief of ‘Bull and Condor’ is in the collection of the University of Arizona Museum of Art (Arizona 1982, 12, repr., 14 3/4 × 19 1/8 × 1 3/8ins.). Neither was included in the collection of small bronzes published by Arnason in 1969, but the Arizona relief is mentioned by Lipchitz in his autobiography, where it is dated 1933 (Lipchitz 1972, p.128). It is possible that they were included in Lipchitz's exhibition at the Galerie Maeght, Paris, in 1946 (catalogue nos. 53–5 were each titled ‘Bas-Relief. Terre cuite. 1932’). A bronze cast of the Tate Gallery relief is in the collection of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (Martin Weyl, Jacques Lipchitz, Bronze Sketches, 1971, 100, repr., as ‘man on horseback fighting bull, 1932’).

Lipchitz had not used bullfighting subjects before this since 1915, but there is an association with the ‘Bull and Condor’ subjects of 1932 (see T03513).
