Many people like to feed old bread to ducks. What’s so bad about that?
Unfortunately, there are few problems with this activity. First, ducks aren’t meant to eat bread. It isn’t good for them. They are meant to eat other things from their natural habitat, such as plants and bugs.
Second, this activity leads to pollution. Some bread will sink to the bottom of the water before the ducks can eat it. The leftover bread rots. This brings pests and diseases into the water where the ducks live.
Third, this changes the ducks’ behavior. Ducks who are fed by humans may forget how to find their own food. This makes them helpless in the wild.
If you want to help ducks in your area, there are other activities you can try. Pick up any trash you see near a duck pond. Drive with caution so that ducks can cross the street safely. If you have a cat, keep it inside so that it won’t hunt ducks for fun.
There are many ways to be kind to ducks. But please, don’t feed them bread.
