The patients had to satisfy the following readiness
criteria: significant improvement or resolution of the
underlying cause of acute respiratory failure; full wakefulness;
need for bronchial toilet less than twice within
the 4-hour period preceding the assessment; stable
hemodynamics without further need for vasoactive
agents
