We have introduced intensity of competition as another variable that can influence
organizational restructuring and firms’ performance. Less than two per cent of the companies had
no competitor. On the other hand, close to 50 per cent of the companies faced rather fierce
competition with more than five competitors in the respective market.12 The rest of the companieswere confronted with one to five competitors. R&D intensity also represents a key variable that
influences firms’ restructuring practices and their performance, innovativeness in particular. The
share of firms with no R&D activities is about 29 per cent; companies with a high R&D intensity
employing more than four per cent of the workforce in R&D, on the other hand, make up about 33
per cent of the sample. The rest of the firms are characterized by medium R&D intensity.
