Bert is an elderly man who comes to the nursing center
weekly. In the cultural information-gathering process (Standard
II), the Center’s nurses have learned some of Bert’s cultural
and social background by allowing him to sit in the rocking
chair and talk. Bert has a Ph.D. in history and taught at
universities in a number of different countries. He was also a
member of the Flying Tigers group of pilots during World
War II. Bert lives in low-income housing near the center. He
gets around using a bicycle when the weather is warm or uses
public transportation at other times. Bert never married and
has been estranged from his family for many years.
