Exhibit 1 About Here
Whereas sustainable tourism lacks precision in conceptual meaning and practice,
a considerable amount has been written over the past decade on definitions and the
imperative of adopting the principles and policies of sustainable development in tourism.
Predicted to reach 1.6 billion by 2020, the volume of international tourism arrivals has
caused well-known negative environmental impacts (World Tourism Organisation,
1997). With mass-tourism crowned as the primary obliterating element in unsustainable
tourism practices, ‘greener’ and small-scale forms of sustainable tourism continue to gain
interest. The UN has even designated the year 2002 as the International Year of
Ecotourism.
