Introduction
Theater is one of the world’s major art forms, and theLincoln Public Schools’ drama curriculum offers opportunities to explore, experience and learn about many aspects of the art. Acting, directing, theatre design, theater technology, playwriting, and theater history all play a role. The curriculum integrates both improvisation and text-basedtheater work, to reflect modern reality in the theater world, and to takeadvantage of the varied learning opportunities each offers.
Drama helps middle school pupils to gain a stronger sense ofself, with improved self-awareness, self-confidence, and self-expression. It also requires students to see theworld through the eyes of others, building empathy and understanding. Students work both cooperatively andindependently.
The drama curriculum places emphasis on exploration ofcharacters, conflicts and ideas, performance skills, creative expression, critical analysis, teamwork and leadership. All fifth grade studentsparticipate in drama class once a week. Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students may elect to participate indrama during the weekly Performing Arts lesson time.
