biofilm and granules, thereby allowing the achievement of very
high biomass concentrations. Moreover, since biomass is entrapped
in the filling material, the system does not require a successive
secondary settling tank to separate the effluent from the sludge.
Thanks to the presence of granular biomass, simultaneous nitrification/
denitrification can be attained.
