ESBL is an enzyme
that mediates resistance to third generation cephalosporins (e.g.,
ceftazidime, cefotaxime and ceftriaxone) and monobactams
(aztreonam), but do not affect cephamycins (cefoxitin and
cefotetan) or carbapenems (meropenem and imipenem).
Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Klebsiella oxytoca
are the most common ESBL-producing pathogens
