Interviews
began with an introduction whereby we showed the maps to
respondents, explaining to them how the maps marked the
evolution of the landscape over time (Figs. 2e4) and discussing
those patterns that were found in the analysis. Questions were
centred on the causes of seven major changes that we found in
the cartographic analysis: (i) the expansion of built-up areas, (ii)
forest growth, (iii) forest decline, (iv) forest persistence, (v)
pasture growth, (vi) pasture decline and (vii) pasture persistence.
