Our aim is to improve the knowledge on trophic
relationships between fish species and the organisms
settled on or around artificial reefs in the Ligurian Sea
(Relini, 2000) and in particular to investigate the role of
amphipods and decapod crustaceans in the diet of some
fishes. The study was divided into two phases: (1) the
diet of four species was described (as far as possible) at
the species level; (2) having verified the importance of
decapod crustaceans for Scorpaena porcus, Scorpaena
notata, and Serranus cabrilla (67–88% of prey in
number) and of amphipods (41%) for Diplodus
annularis, we ascertained the distribution of these two
groups by species inside the artificial reef and in the
surrounding area by comparing lists obtained from
respective samples.
Studies of the Loano artificial reef have listed 76
species of macroalgae, 120 invertebrate species and 78
fish species (Relini et al., 1995; Relini, 2000). The vagon
fauna present on the reef blocks and around them
has been described by Dell’Acqua and Zamboni (2000)for polychaetes and by De Angelis et al. (2000) for
amphipods and decapods.
