I met Laila, a fellow guest at the evening. We were talking for quite a bit after dinner. Suddenly a bat
fell down. Apparently she saw it flying against the light and then crushing down, still dizzy. Out of
curiosity, we got closer to the bat lying on the ground to take some pictures, but we warned the
people not to get too close for a bite may transmit rabies. Afterwards we discussed what to do next,
for she knew that the bat would not be able to fly off the ground. I suggested sweeping it into the
dustpan- carrying it outside and then releasing it. Because she studied Zoology and was very worried
about the animals’ welfare, she didn’t agree and instead wanted to carry it outside, wrapped in cloth.
I tried to organize some cloth for her from the kitchen and bar area, but they didn’t want to give
them out of hygienically reasons and offered a plastic bag instead. While I was asking for the cloth,
she must have been told that the cat will solve the bat problem, because she explained afterwards
that something similar to this was mentioned by the staff. She took the leadership with all the staff
not really caring, and me watching but trusting in her experience and her knowledge. Apparently she
got bitten through the plastic bag. We decided that sweeping might be the best chance we have. So
again it was her who acted. To be fair, it should have been my part to do that and care about the bat,
but I was hesitant where she was not. She managed to sweep the bat into the dustpan after a few
tries. We carried it outside and released it. The bat was able to fly away. I asked her about the bite
and that she should be checked, but she mentioned that is was not skin breaking. When everything
settled down, we discussed the situation. She seemed very unhappy that the staff was so ignorant,
