Significant efforts to chemically mod-ify the CNF to make them compatible with PLA matrices havebeen investigated. Various cellulose surface modification tech-niques including silylation, TEMPO oxidation, acetylation and theuse of surfactants have been researched to create possibilities forcombining cellulose nanofibers with PLA. However, the mechani-cal properties of the resulting composites are not as high expectedand the process is time consuming and very expensive. In addition, surface modification of CNF can negatively affect biodegradation ofthe final composites
