Global warming, urban pollution, oil reserves depletion and
high cost of fossil fuels, have been the driving forces for current
research on the use of alternative energy sources, particularly those
deriving from biomass. Ethanol produced from different renewable
feedstocks constitutes an alternative fuel for spark ignition engines.
It is considered biodegradable, deriving from the use of solar
energy stored in biomass, oxygenated and sulfur-free. Carbon in
ethanol has a vegetable origin and, therefore, when it is released
during the combustion process, it will not contribute to increase
CO2 emissions
