Of course, children can be told this and they will accept it, as they will accept that Lima is the capital of Peru; but real teaching means that it will have a meaning foe them, it will connect with their own experience, it will become memorable, In a fortnight, it will still mean something. It isn’t so hard to make this connection at the planning stage. For example, in this case, children in a school already know about having their lives shaped by codes of conduct which are enforced via rewards and punishments, just like the doom painting. As soon as we made this connection, we were able to re-plan the lesson (for other groups), to clarify the objectives, to focus the activities and to achieve a new depth of understanding. We decided that, as well as knowing about doom painting and about some other specifically historical aspects of context, which were of course already part of the medium-term plan, the children would understand how rewards and punishments could be deployed and communicated as components of social control.
