self-development, while also promoting the development of groups and
organisations. Instead of responding to the immediate self-interest of followers
with either a carrot or a stick, transformational leaders arouse in the individual a
heightened awareness to key issues, to the group and organisation, while
increasing the confidence of followers, and gradually moving them from concerns
for existence to concerns for achievement, growth and development
