Perform complex animal husbandry duties in a research environment. Feed, water, and care for animals. Identify and report signs of illness and abnormalities. Administer special diets and maintain feeding records. Receive and house new animals. Coordinate work with others. Euthanize animals. Initiate supply and equipment orders.

Required Qualifications*

- 2-year college degree and a moderate amount of paid animal care experience

- High school diploma and a considerable amount of paid animal care experience

- Degree in veterinary technology

- Must be Assistant Laboratory Animal (ALAT) certified* within six months of becoming eligible to

take the test (*certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science)

- Ability to function independently as well as a team member in a team setting

- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with customers

- Job schedule is Monday through Friday, with some weekends and holidays required.

- This position requires considerable use of arms and legs and activities such as climbing,

lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and the handling of materials which at times weigh as

much as 50 lbs.

- Must be able to push and pull equipment weighing up to 1,000 pounds.

- Must be able to work at a level of 8" above the floor and up to 6' to 7' above the floor.

- Must be able to perform repetitive motions over extended periods of time.

- Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal

byproducts, and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time.

- Final candidates will be asked to demonstrate their ability to perform certain aspects of the job.

- Candidates will be asked to provide proof of academic degrees and/or professional

licenses/certifications.

Desired Qualifications*
Reasonable knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in animal care and laboratory activities. Some knowledge of animal research and breeding procedures and practices. Some knowledge of the principles of medical asepsis. Since we are predominantly a rodent facility, any experience dealing with rodents is highly desirable. Acceptable also is paid hands-on experience with farm animals, pet shops, zoos, animal rehabilitation centers, science or animal-related coursework, etc.

The Full Time Animal Care Specialist (Wolf Haven) will provide consistent care and training for the animal collection at Wolf Haven and assist in the training of the entire Zoological Operations collection when necessary. Work daily with a team to maintain and adapt animal training and husbandry to best fit the needs of the area and collection. Deliver accurate information and world class guest service during one-on-one guest interactions while handling animals. Assist on a required basis with outside events and PR. Maintain all zoological areas to a high standard. Follow all containment and safety SOPs to safely work around Class 1 Predators. Exercise excellent behavioral judgment and team work skills to ensure a cohesive, safe working environment.
