5. CONCLUSION
KM is widely recognized as being critical for improved
organizational performance. However, most existing approaches
for KM planning have failed, or have not brought forth any real
benefits with regard to performance improvement. To be
successful, KM strategies must identify the key needs and issues
within the organization, and provide a framework for addressing
these (Shannak et al., 2012). We illustrated the use of a core
process approach to knowledge audit in the context of IWM KM
at a global provincial level. Using this high level view of KM
problems and opportunities, we were able to pinpoint the crucial
aspects to be addressed and define appropriate solutions to meet
the business vision. Although many activities remain to be
performed in order to fully implement the KM solutions, it
remains clear that the audit approach helped shed some light on
KM priorities in this complex environment. Water decision
makers involved in this KM auditing exercise were also very
enthusiastic about the thoroughness of the approach and the
potential impacts of the formulated solutions. The analysis also
highlighted all the important issues to consider in KM initiatives
at an early stage and serve as a guide for budgeting decisions and
determining KM priorities for the years to come.
