Outsourcing Has Regional
Implications
As with manufacturing outsourcing,
the process of services outsourcing is
likely to vary geographically, among
different regions of the US and within
metropolitan areas. Figure 5 shows
occupations at risk for some of the
largest metropolitan areas in the US,
while Figure 6 shows wage levels by
occupation, relative to the US, for the
same metropolitan areas. Most of the
nation's large metropolitan areas have
a higher proportion of jobs in occupations
at risk than is found in the US as
a whole, suggesting that many of
these urban centers may share disproportionately
in the wave of outsourcing.
However, the occupational composition
of the at-risk jobs varies
widely among these MSAs, as do
wage levels, and the type of job re
shuffling is likely to reflect these differences.
