Tackle transport barriers – The high costs of transport leave some young people
trapped looking for work in high unemployment/low vacancy areas. For some young
people this is the single biggest barrier to work. Given the large costs of long-term
youth unemployment, providing travel subsidies or concessions to long-term jobseekers
and those beginning work is a cost effective step that addresses an important barrier
to work. Greater leverage should be asserted on transport companies in contract
and subsidy negotiations to secure a better deal for the long-term unemployed which
removes this barrier to finding work
