3.3. Economic evaluation
Calculated gross revenue, production costs, and profits of potato crop were given in
Table 8. Gross revenue values decreased from full irrigation treatments to un-irrigated
treatments. Decrease in water amount resulted in small reductions in production cost
because only pumping cost was reduced. In Turkey, water price was charged by the
irrigation district at a fixed fee per hectare.
There was a small difference in the profit values of the two methods. The SD method
was slightly profitable than the SDD.
In 2002, I66 treatment was the most profitable compared to the other irrigation levels.
Potato crops did not need much irrigation water in 2002 because of excessive rainfall
(Fig. 2). The profit of the driest treatments resulted significant reduction in both years.
Shock et al. (1998) reported similar results.
According to obtained results in this study, the most profitable irrigation level was I100 in
2000, but it was I66 in 2002. In 2002, all of the deficit irrigation treatments resulted in a
reduction in profit. Because, the price of the potato crop in 2002 was two times lower than
in 2000. However, the reduction in cost was not two times in 2000 and 2002. The average102 per ton (250 million TL) in 2002, with a decrease of tuber price about 30%. However,
product cost also increased due to big economic crisis in Turkey in February 2001. Results
of 2000 and 2002 could not be compared because of the excessive fluctuations of price in
these years.
potato tuber price was US$ 227 per ton (360 million TL) in 2000, but it decreased to US$
