RISK FACTORS
Older age and black race have both been associated with an increased likelihood of dehydration. Ciccone and colleagues found that upon admission to an ED, adults 85 years of age and older were three times more likely to have a diagnosis of dehydration than were adults 65 to 74 years of age. Older black adults have higher prevalence rates of dehydration at the time of hospitalization than do older white adults.
