Statement of the problem
While the Chinese students are increasing yearly in thehigher education institution in Malaysia, the researcher felt theneed to survey Chinese students’ level of ELC listening comprehension and speaking proficiency. In pursuit of thisobjective, it is crucial that self-learning approach wasemphasized as the important skills in language learning. Overthe years, English communicative competence has always beeninadequate for the China’s students. This is especially true whenstudents did not improve significantly in their ELC proficiency.Therefore, research needs to be conducted in search of a moreeffective English instruction in this regard, and one of theresearch methods is to investigate students’ perceptionsregarding their ELC proficiency.
