Seeds are used in tribal and indigenous jewellery all around the world. We were particularly attracted to using seeds and other natural raw materials, such as coconut, because not only are they eco-friendly, but they are also a free raw material that connects the jeweller to their environment. In an urban capital city, young Cambodian women don’t connect a natural material to something that can be precious like jewellery. Yet when our team in Phnom Penh started to collect the seeds from custard apples and vibrant red seeds that rained from the trees during the monsoon months, nostalgic memories of village life were linked to whole new possibilities in their creative work.
