Timothy Kenner grew up on a farm in Oklahoma. One of the things he loved best was to lie in the tall grass and look up at the sky. Timothy wished he had wings. "How wonderful it would be to fly," he thought. When he was ten, his mother took him to an air show in Minnesota. Timothy had never seen an airplane before. Most people had never seen an airplane.
Airplane were something new. The first airplane could not fly very fast. They could not fly very far or very high and they were only big enough for one or two people. The propeller was in back. The pilot sat outside, in the front. His mother told him that airplanes were dangerous. She did not want him to go up in an airplane ever. "Suppose the engine stopped," she said. "Or a wing fell off. You could be killed."
