Speech and Language Training
The neurologic music therapist may implement several techniques to remediate speech and
language deficits or to maintain language in patients with debilitating conditions such as
dementia or Parkinson's disease. The therapeutic mechanisms involved in the treatment include
differential hemispheric processing, patterned information processing, perceptual sensory
priming, and rhythmic entrainment (Thaut, 1999b ). The standardized techniques include Melodic
Intonation Therapy (MIT), Musical Speech Stimulation (MUSTIM), Rhythmic Speech Cueing
(RSC), Vocal Intonation Therapy (VIT), Therapeutic Singing (TS), Oral Motor and Respiratory
Exercises (OMREX), Developmental Speech and Language Training Through Music (DSLM),
and Symbolic Communication Training Through Music (SYCOM) (Thaut, 2001
Musical Speech Stimulation (MUSTIM)- The purpose of this technique is to produce
nonpropositional speech in persons who have aphasia. The technique incorporates initiation or
completion of overlearned songs, chants, rhymes, and musical phrases to elicit spoken words or
functional phrases (Basso, Capatini, & Vignola, 1979). For example, when presented with
overlearned song lyrics, an individual is likely to fill in the blank, such as "You are my "
(Thaut, 1999b ).
