The meerkats were born on 8 May and the Darwin’s rhea birds hatched on 31 May, making them 4 weeks old and 5 days old respectively.
At the moment, the meerkats can often be spotted snuggling with their mum Queen whilst the new Darwin’s rhea birds are with their parents under close supervision from zookeepers.
The latest arrivals have been very exciting for Edinburgh Zoo as Darwin’s rhea birds are rare and have been in decline for some time now. They are normally found in South America and are named after Charles Darwin after he found them on a trip to the country in 1833.
Meerkats, meanwhile, are small creatures related to mongeese and are found in Africa. They are very famous for standing on their hind legs and looking around, as well as for eating dangerous creatures such as snakes, scorpions and spiders.
