In two fields the radio aimed at something more that popular entertainment. It undertook educational programs – rather feebly, to be sure —and it broadcast news and political campaigns. It is interesting to note that the radio remained, with very few exceptions, a private enterprise, supported not by taxes, as in all European countries, but by advertisers. Whether Americans paid too high a price for freedom from government control of the radio is a matter about which opinions differ.
