To assist in retention and transfer, adult educators can encourage the learners to relate the new material to their previous experiences, their jobs, or other appropriate aspects of their lives. The educator can help the learners anticipate obstacles to transferring new material; anticipated obstacles may be dealt with more easily than unanticipated ones. Retention and transference are assisted also when learners are actively involved in the learning process and have practiced the skills. Active learners tend to learn skills more thoroughly and, therefore, confidence to employ the skills is increased.
