In the first stanza of "The Nymph's Reply to the Shephard" by Sir Walter Raleigh love is denied to a shepherd by the usage of the word "if." This word suggest uncertainty of occurance for love to the shepherd. The whole Shepherd situation with the nymph is hypothetical and may never occur. THe nymph tells that one must let things go and can't hold on to them forrever. Those that do will see the world pass by them without being table to enjoy them. Because time deosn't wait for anybody, it will pass by regardless.
