Cellulose is a linear polymer that is composed of d-glucose subunits linked by β-1,4 glycosidic bonds forming the dimmer cellobiose.
These form long chains (or elemental fibrils) linked together by hydrogen bonds and intra- and intermolecular van der Waals forces. This polymer usually is present as a crystalline form and a small amount of nonorganized cellulose chains forms amorphous cellulose. In the latter conformation, cellulose is more susceptible to enzymatic degradation (Pérez et al., 2002). Cellulose appears in nature to be associated with other plant compounds, mainly lignin, and this association may affect its biodegradation.
