Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), a biennial member of the
family Asteraceae, produces a tuberous tap root. Explants
isolated from these roots easily produce roots or buds, thus
chicory offers remarkable opportunities for studying morphogenesis
(Gautheret, 1953). This was recently confirmed
by Dubois et al. (1988) who readily obtained somaticembryos
on several organs of the hybrid C. intybus¬C.
