Due to the raise in obesity problems in developed countries and a general growing awareness of health implications connected to a high calorie diet, the use of artificial sweeteners is increasing. Moreover, the worldwide increase of the diabetic population also contributes to an enlarged use of artificial sweeteners. Saccharin is authorised in Europe as food additive and is used in beverages. Its acceptable daily intake value of 0-5 mg/kg body weight was established by the European Scientific committee on food.
