The first issue we would like to comment on is the representation of the Greek and American family. Family for Greeks, as the film reveals, is a highly valued institution that has to be respected. Weekly gatherings of the whole family are common for Greeks, unlike for Austrians for example. Emotional and financial wqarental support for the children even if when they are adults is also usual. This is revealed by Gus’ gesture to buy Toula a house as a present for getting married. Taking care and respecting older people is another Greek trait that Toula has internalized since she revealed that she is expected to “feed everyone until the day we dieâ€.
