It is not a coincidence that the resources, HIT support, and practice affiliation are tied directly into the financial aspect of medical practice. One of the major barriers identified in the literature deals directly with the cost associated with implementing EHRs (Miller &Sim, 2004). Past reports indicated that physicians who report having no plans to use EHRs are concerned with both the start-up and the ongoing financial costs of EHR systems (Galt et al., 2008). It is likely that prior experience with various HITs, including EHRs, may be necessary to increase adoption rates but not sufficient to overcome the cost barrier.
