Two men were arrested by the police after they had sold a stolen painting to an art gallery
in Guildford. The owner of the gallery claimed that he had bought the painting in good faith,
unaware that it had been stolen. The painting, a portrait of a young woman in a wide brimmed
straw hat sitting under a tree, was owned by Marie Gilles, aged 84. She claimed that the painting
had been given to one of her ancestors by the artist. She had owned it since 1950 when it was
given to her by an aunt as a wedding present. The painting had been stolen from her house two
weeks previous to the arrest of the two men.
