Sunk: during return from transport duty to Wewak, torpedoed by USS ALBACORE (SS-218) and went dead in the water. ARASHIO attempted to tow but the keel finally buckled and ship sank 70 miles northwest of Manus Island (00-50 S, 146-06 E). Eight killed; survivors, including Commander Hirose (to C.O. SHIMAKAZE), rescued by ARASHIO.
