Careful planning is crucial in choosing materials (concrete, plastic, or fiber) for construction of tanks, tank covers (to
prevent fish loss and contamination), and plumbing. The tanks must be reasonably inert to the water. Care should be
taken to ensure that concrete structures are properly treated so that there is minimal leaching and salt deposition
(Hawkins and Lloyd 1981). Construction materials should not contain copper, nickel, cadmium, or brass. Polyvinyl
chloride pipes are commonly used, but once installed the system must be adequately flushed to eliminate acetone,
methylethylketones, and tetrahydrofurans that are released following gluing (Reimschuessel and Kane 1993). This may
take weeks and requires water chemical analysis to confirm that the toxins have been removed.
