Standards of deviance vary from one group (or subculture) to another. In the United States, it is generally considered acceptable to sing along at a folk or rock concert, but not at the opera. Just as deviance is defined by place, so too is it relative to time. For instance, drinking alcohol at 6:00 P.M. is a common practice in our society, but engaging in the same behavior at breakfast is viewed as a deviant act and as symptomatic of a drinking problem. Table 7-1 offers additional examples of untimely acts that we regard as deviant in the United States.
