Port surveys and ongoing monitoring provide the
option to quarantine an area and provide the option to
quarantine an area and attempt a local eradication [19].
Effective quarantine provides the opportunity to develop
an eradication response but may be difficult to
achieve in many instances. What can be done is to
reduce the marine traffic between invaded and noninvaded
areas and thus reduce the further impacts of
that invasive species in the affected nations. The
importance of rapid and effective quarantine is well
demonstrated by the consequences of its failure. When
the North Pacific seastar was detected in the Derwent
estuary,Tasmania in the early 1990s nothing was done
to reduce the risk of its spread. It has since been
transported to Port Phillip Bay,a hub of shipping
activity for mainland Australia, and will continue to be
transported to the Great Australian Bight (the longest
east–west coastline in the world),unless preventative
management actions are taken
