Three dimensional (3D) cell cultures have great potential for overcoming the challenges inherent with 2D cell culture. For example, if a 3D cell culture model that represents the interactions between cells can be used to test a compound, those compounds that are most likely to work or fail early on in the drug testing process can be determined prior to animal or human clinical trials. Better results earlier could save millions of dollars in drug development, could reduce the number of animals utilized in drug testing, and move drugs from the bench to bedside much faster.
