Plant material may be reported as foreign matter in many different forms. Extraneous vegetable matter (EVM) such as bits of leaf or stalk are frequently found to be the cause of complaints in vegetables such as peas or beans or fruit such as raisins or sultanas. Woody material from the centre of roots of carrot or parsnip, or from the stem of cabbage, can result from root crops overwintering or from the use of older cabbage than the ideal.
