The quiote (edible stem of the maguey flower) and leaves are used for the
construction of houses. Its fibers are used to make textiles or costumes. The dried leaves
and piñas (stems) are used as fuel. In agricultural areas they are used to demarcate land,
build and protect decks, shelterbelts and erosion protection (Nobel, 1998). Currently most
of the agave cultivated and wild in Oaxaca is used to produce mescal (Cruz, 2001)
