During a survey of the microbial diseases of insect pests of rice at Cuttack in India, severe infection by the fungus Beauveria bassiana was observed in Scirpophaga incertulas (Wlk.) (Tryporyza incertulas), Chilo auricilius Dudgn., Parnara sp. and Nephotettix virescens (Dist.); notes are given on the symptoms in each. Isolation of the fungus from diseased insects and pathogenicity tests are described; the pathogen could be re-transmitted to all the species mentioned and also to Sesamia inferens (Wlk.), Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Gn.), Hieroglyphus sp. and Oxya sp. The spread of infection was favoured by high temperatures and humidity rates such as would normally occur in a rice field. Although Beauveria spp. have been used as control agents against other insects, little is known of their incidence in rice pests; investigations are now in progress on the effectiveness of B. bassiana against rice pests in general in the field, with a view to possible use for biological control.
