After the euphoria of beating Manchester United 4-0, Wednesday night's EFL Cup exit to West Ham will have brought everyone connected with Chelsea back down to earth. Defeat in a London derby always prompts a sizeable amount of introspection and Antonio Conte will have much to think about following the 2-1 loss at the London Stadium.
With the starting XI showing seven changes from the one that began against United, perhaps it is sensible not to read too much into events in east London. It is clear, however, that at present the manager's preferred first XI is better drilled in his methods than the supporting cast and it would be a surprise if the team that played last Sunday were not restored in its entirety at Southampton this weekend.
